Mirror, Mirror
She checked her makeup in the mirror again, for the fifth time, scanning for any blemish or smudge that could make her look less than perfect to the people downstairs. She had to be perfect. She fussed over her pearls, trying to decide how best to let them fall across her cleavage. Just enough to draw a downward glance, but nothing more than that. Enough to tempt them, but not enough to make them write her off as a ditz. Perfect? She twisted them again. Checked the mirror again.
Satisfied for the moment, she flipped up the faucet handle to wash her hands. Her phone clattered across the sink, and she reached for it with wet hands before it co

“Pendleton! Thirteen!”
She made her way to the marked cubicle, taking a seat in the battered orange plastic chair that was provided for her. She fidgeted nervously as she waited for him to appear.
He looked tired. More than anything else, she decided later, was the sense that he looked extremely tired. His hair was thinning and flecked with silver; his walk was slow, with a hint of a limp. But it was his eyes, sunken and weary, that struck her the most. He looked like an exhausted coal miner emerging from the bowels of the Earth after a double shift. He took his seat, and looked at her.
They both reached for the telep

The Loaner
"Wow." "It's all right, Mister Smith. You can stare at her all you like. She won't mind." "Is she..." he struggled to say the word. "Is she... hypnotized?" "In a way, yes. Deeply conditioned is a better way to describe it. When Francesca is in this state, she will obey your every command. She's also programmed to anticipate and respond to your every need. She'll never question you... or your motives." There was an awkward pause, and John realized that the pause was meant for him. Tell her to do something. Try her out. "Francesca," he said, his voice wavering. "Put... um... stick your finger in your nose." "Yes, master." She did so immediately, up to the first knuckle. Her expression never changed. He tried to picture Amy doing the same, and shook his head. Amy would have laughed and told him where he could stick his finger. "Does it hurt? When they... you know. Get programmed?" Thank you for taking the time to read this chapter.
I'd love to know what you think, so I encourage everyone to leave a comment down below.
Edit: I made some pretty large edits to this chapter. Nothing affects the over-all plot, but the quality should better reflect what I've been able to accomplish for later chapters. Basically just toned down Rachel's reaction to be a little less extreme, took out the pathetic element that I originally only added to justify her previous reaction, and added more of her perspective to what had happened. Hope you enjoy!

Ahhh Penway,
Love this story so much. It is so well done on all levels, plot, story line, characters and the MC is hot as hell.
Janet is chasing her dream, Melanie. Who wouldn't want to? And in chasing it, what will she find when she gets there? Sometimes chasing a dream can lead to things you really didn't imagine and already she has tinkered with her dear friend Rachel and she has found out.
And poor friend Rachel. Sweet, ebullient Rachel. A pawn in Janet's game. A proving ground so to speak. What will the cost be to her? She is already a bit mixed up now from the device and has found out what happened to her.
She wants a fix from Janet. Can Janet undo the things she has done and put things to right?
Can't wait to find out.
